I read this on recommendation from a friend. Like a lot of working mothers that I know, I found the description of the "rushing woman" very familiar (except for the author's obsession with alcohol - not everyone drinks!). The explanation of the impact on our bodies is clear, though I would have appreciated more links to established research - I felt the book was light-on in that regard and it made me suspicious that I was reading opinion, not something science-based.Where I feel the book lets the reader down is in it's patronising and moralising tone - that it's your fault you're a "rushing woman" and if only you would make mental and physical space to "relax" and "change your perspective" then you'd feel a lot better. This is simply victim-blaming.We live in a world where the odds are stacked against women - the "to-do" list is not something you invented yourself, it's there because there is a social and economic demand to work full-time while raising two (no more, no fewer) children, paying the mortgage and somehow making time for Pilates and yoga (but don't bulk up too much and don't be either too thin or too fat). In this respect I found the book perpetuating unrealistic expectations of women.What did I hope for instead? Maybe some acknowledgement of the structural nature of this problem - that until women are recognised for the value of their caring roles, until women are paid equally for the work they do, until women have social equality and equality of political representation, this will be a never-ending problem.My other criticism is that I do not see any acknowledgement in this book of women who are anything other than wealthy and white, which made it difficult to relate to. If you have unlimited resources, if you do indeed have choice, then Dr Libby's suggestions are probably gold. But so many women don't have the luxury. But maybe they also don't have the time to read this book...
I really resonated a lot with most of the book and there were several times when I nodded in agreement or thought 'That's me!' The only 'issue' I had with the book was sometimes the overall tone came off as a bit haughty and sharp. And the obsession with alcohol was almost every other paragraph. Not all rushing women turn to booze for relief or relaxation! It was almost over assuming that every single woman who drinks is someone who drinks too much. I don't feel the one glass of wine per week I enjoy on Saturday nights when cooking puts me in the category of someone who needs to abstain or has a 'problem' with drinking.
